“The job is not for everyone.”
This phrase has been uttered a million times before by people who don’t understand how important design is or how much work goes into creating one thing. Designers don’t just wake up one day and decide they’re going to start designing. They have to dedicate years to becoming a designer, studying, learning, making mistakes, failing, succeeding. It’s a hard job that requires a lot of patience.
“I’m sorry I haven’t been updating my blog.”
Designers get it. Sometimes life gets in the way of design inspiration and working on projects. As much as I would like to post new inspiration everyday – sometimes I can’t manage it due to life situations. However, I try my best to keep you guys updated on what’s going on in the creative world and what artists are doing so that you can stay inspired always. With that said let’s move onto the real deal ..!
“I know everything about fashion.”
This is the most common conversation I get when I tell people I’m a designer. Most people don’t realize that clothing can be very intricate and it requires an understanding of different techniques. When you’re working on a project you need to consider things like fabric, build, color, pattern and fit. If you’re someone who knows everything about fashion – think again! You need to know how these things relate to each other.
Style is not just a matter of colour or how something fits. There’s a certain style to each piece of clothing that you can apply to your designs.
Because of its importance in the fashion world, I’ve decided to dedicate an entire post to Style.
“All my clothes are tone on tone.”
When people first start out, they think that all their clothes should be one colour. What they don’t realize is that all fashion has different tones and the tones in your outfit should relate to each other so as not to clash with each other. Mixing different tones together can create a very cool effect, so never feel discouraged from using multiple tones!
“I don’t keep up with trends. I just design.”
Well duh. I mean it’s not like you’re going to change your clothing every 3 months. The only reason why you want to use a pattern that gives off on trend is because of the great opportunity it provides. It gives you the ability to create something different and unique, so always keep a look out for these opportunities!
There are two main things I try my best at: keeping up with current trends and making sure everything I make will be versatile enough so people can use it for many other occasions. I don’t really like to be confined to one style, so I make sure that everything I create has a little bit of everything in it!
“My outfits aren’t as nice as other peoples’ outfits.”
Yes, yes, and yes. You’re probably wondering why this is a real thing. This is because the design process requires a lot of work and time. It’s not an easy job that you can whip up overnight – it requires patience and devotion. If you’re still struggling to complete your projects, just remember that practice makes perfect!
You’ll find that when you practice more, your designs will improve drastically. The more experience you have with creating outfits will help you achieve better results each time .
“What’s your design style?”
This question is like a spark to my creative soul. If you’re designing, you obviously want to impress others by creating something unique. People who have no sense of style, know exactly what to wear, and always look good. You want people to admire your designs even if they’re on the ‘wrong’ side or colour. You want people to think that you really know what you’re doing and that your outfits are amazing. Of course this can be inconvenient because you have no idea what they think of them, but at least they look good! This is something I’ve been asked a lot so I thought it would be a good thing for me to explain about it in this post.
As you can see a lot of these things require skill, patience and practice. Implement these things into your daily life to boost your creative abilities!
“I don’t have enough knowledge about color.”
Colour is a very important part of clothing design. It is something that can give your outfit the WOW factor or completely ruin it. Colour combinations are an important part of the fashion world because they have the ability to change the vibe or bring down the attitude of an entire outfit. When you’re working on outfits try to make sure they all use different tones, just remember that they should relate to each other so as not to clash with each other!
“It doesn’t matter how much time I put into my designs. They’re just fashion.”
This is not a phrase that I say very often, and it’s not because I don’t believe in design. It’s just that the world of fashion is such a big industry and is constantly evolving, so it’s hard for us to keep up with it all. What we do know about clothing design though is that you need to build a strong foundation of knowledge with areas such as pattern, fit, construction and colour before you make a proper piece of clothing. Because something as simple as creating an outfit can affect the overall popularity of your work – make sure it’s worth the effort!
“I’m just going to be an illustrator. I’ll make the designs people want to see.”
If you are not serious about fashion. You can’t just expect to be able to design amazing clothing and put it out there hoping that people love it. If you’re wondering about ways to get better, you need to start by doing some research into what makes good clothing and how it all works – because just as much as copying is frowned upon in the fashion world; making original clothing isn’t easy either!
